The story of David and Goliath is one of the most well-known narratives in the Bible, found in 1 Samuel 17. It takes place during a time of conflict between the Israelites and the Philistines.

The Philistines had sent out their champion warrior, Goliath, who was an immense man described as over 9 feet tall. Goliath challenged the Israelites to send out their own champion to fight him in single combat, with the outcome deciding the victor between the two armies.

For 40 days, Goliath taunted the Israelite army, but no one dared to face him. One day, the young shepherd boy David arrived at the Israelite camp to bring provisions to his brothers who were soldiers. David heard Goliath’s challenge and was incredulous that no one would fight him.

Against the protests of the Israelite soldiers and King Saul, the young David volunteered to take on Goliath himself. Armed only with a sling and five smooth stones, David approached the mighty Goliath. When Goliath saw the small David, he mocked and cursed him.

But David declared his faith in the Lord, saying “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty” (1 Samuel 17:45). David then slung a stone that struck Goliath in the forehead, mortally wounding the giant. David then used Goliath’s own sword to cut off his head.

The victory of the young shepherd boy David over the fearsome Goliath became a legendary triumph of faith, courage and God’s power over human strength. It has become an enduring symbol of the triumph of the weak over the mighty through trust in the Lord.
