Cain And Abel
After being expelled from the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had two sons – Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer, while his younger brother Abel was a shepherd.
One day, both Cain and Abel made offerings to God. God looked with favor upon Abel’s offering of the firstborn of his flock, but did not look kindly on Cain’s offering of produce from the soil. Cain became very angry and resentful.
God confronted Cain, asking “Why are you angry? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?” But Cain’s anger only grew. One day, when they were in the field, Cain attacked and murdered his brother Abel.
When God asked Cain where his brother was, Cain replied defiantly, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” God punished Cain, saying “The ground will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
Cain was fearful of being killed in retaliation, so God placed a mark on him to warn others not to harm him. Cain then went out from the presence of the Lord and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
The story of Cain and Abel demonstrates the corruption and violence that entered the world after the sin of Adam and Eve. It highlights the tragic consequences of jealousy, anger, and murder within a family. The contrast between the righteous Abel and the wicked Cain foreshadows the ongoing spiritual battle between good and evil.
