1. God Sends Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh:
– After God calls Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, he also appoints Aaron, Moses’ brother, to be his spokesman.
– God instructs Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh and demand that he let the Israelites go to worship God in the wilderness.
2. Moses and Aaron Confront Pharaoh:
– Moses and Aaron approach Pharaoh and deliver God’s message, saying, “The Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.'”
3. Pharaoh’s Refusal:
– Pharaoh arrogantly responds, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”
4. Moses and Aaron Perform a Sign:
– To demonstrate God’s power, Moses and Aaron throw down Aaron’s staff, and it becomes a snake. But Pharaoh’s sorcerers are able to replicate this sign.
5. The Plague of Blood:
– When Pharaoh still refuses to let the people go, God instructs Moses to strike the Nile River with his staff, turning the water into blood.
– This is the first of the ten plagues that God will unleash on Egypt to force Pharaoh to comply.
6. Pharaoh’s Hardened Heart:
– Despite the plague, Pharaoh’s heart remains hardened, and he refuses to listen to Moses and Aaron’s demands.
This initial confrontation between Moses, Aaron, and Pharaoh sets the stage for the dramatic events of the Exodus. It demonstrates Pharaoh’s stubborn resistance to God’s will, as well as God’s determination to free the Israelites from Egyptian bondage through a series of miraculous plagues.
