Hannah is a central figure in the opening chapters of the biblical book of 1 Samuel. She is remembered for her deep faith and the miraculous birth of her son, the prophet Samuel.
Hannah was one of the two wives of a man named Elkanah. Although Elkanah loved Hannah, she was barren and unable to have children, which caused her great distress. Hannah’s rival wife, Peninnah, would provoke and taunt her about her childlessness.
Heartbroken, Hannah would weep and refuse to eat during the family’s annual pilgrimage to the tabernacle in Shiloh. One year, Hannah went to the tabernacle and prayed fervently to the Lord, vowing that if He gave her a son, she would dedicate the child to serve God all the days of his life.
The Lord heard Hannah’s earnest prayer, and she conceived and gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel. True to her vow, when Samuel was weaned, Hannah brought him to the tabernacle and presented him to the priest Eli to be raised in service to the Lord.
Hannah’s story is one of profound faith and trust in God, even in the midst of deep personal sorrow. Her song of thanksgiving in 1 Samuel 2:1-10 is a beautiful expression of her joy and reverence for the Lord.
The birth of Samuel, who would become a great prophet and judge in Israel, was a direct result of Hannah’s unwavering prayers. Her story has inspired generations of believers to persevere in faith, knowing that God hears and answers the cries of His people.
