Exodus Chapter 28 – The Priestly Garments
This chapter provides detailed instructions from God to Moses regarding the special garments to be worn by the priests, specifically Aaron and his sons, as they ministered in the tabernacle.
1. The Ephod (v.6-14)
– A decorated, sleeveless vest-like garment to be made of fine linen, gold, blue, purple and scarlet yarn.
– Two onyx stones were to be mounted on the shoulders, engraved with the names of the 12 tribes.
2. The Breastpiece (v.15-30)
– A square pouch with 12 precious stones, one for each tribe, set in gold filigree.
– The Urim and Thummim were to be placed inside, used for divine guidance.
3. Other Garments (v.31-43)
– The robe of the ephod, woven entirely of blue.
– The tunic, sash, and turban, all made of fine linen.
– Undergarments to cover the priests’ bodies.
These garments were to be made with the finest materials and craftsmanship, as they would be worn by the priests when approaching the holy God on behalf of the people. The stones, engravings, and other details held symbolic and practical significance.
The chapter emphasizes the importance of the priesthood and the sacredness of their duties. The priests’ special garments set them apart and enabled them to minister properly before the Lord.
