Leveticus Chapter 10
Leviticus Chapter 10: The Death of Nadab and Abihu
This chapter continues the narrative from the end of Leviticus 9, focusing on the tragic incident involving Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu.
1. Nadab and Abihu’s Unauthorized Incense (v.1-3)
– Nadab and Abihu offered “unauthorized fire” before the Lord, which he had not commanded.
– Fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed Nadab and Abihu, and they died.
– God declared that he would be treated as holy by those who come near him, and he would be glorified before all the people.
2. Moses’ Instructions to Aaron (v.4-7)
– Moses instructed Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, not to mourn the death of Nadab and Abihu.
– He commanded them to continue their priestly duties and not to leave the tent of meeting, lest they also die.
3. Restrictions on Alcohol for Priests (v.8-11)
– The Lord spoke to Aaron, forbidding him and his sons from drinking wine or other fermented drink when they entered the tent of meeting.
– This was to ensure the priests could distinguish between the holy and the common, and could teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord had given.
4. The Remaining Offerings (v.12-20)
– Moses gave additional instructions to Aaron and his sons regarding the proper handling of the grain offerings and sin offerings.
– Aaron’s response to the death of his sons is noted, as he refrained from eating the sin offering due to his grief.
This chapter emphasizes the holiness of God and the gravity of approaching him improperly. Nadab and Abihu’s unauthorized actions resulted in their immediate deaths, serving as a solemn warning to the priests and the people about the need for reverence and obedience in worship.
